During his visit to Cairo, Francisco Gaztelu Mezquiriz, Director for North Africa at the Directorate-General MENA, engaged in dynamic exchanges with Egyptian partners on the evolving Pact for the Mediterranean. The visit builds on recent consultations held at the American University in Cairo, with a continued call for ideas and proposals to shape this renewed framework for inclusive dialogue and strengthened cooperation across the Mediterranean.

On the margins of his trip, Mr Gaztelu Mezquiriz also visited key EU-supported cultural heritage sites, including the City of the Dead in Historic Cairo. There, he witnessed firsthand the impact of the EU-Egypt partnership in restoring monuments and preserving shared heritage in collaboration with local communities, highlighting the essential role of cultural exchange in fostering mutual understanding and sustainable development in the region.
