The Department of Antiquities of Jordan and The Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at preserving national heritage, increasing awareness and knowledge about archaeological and historical sites in Aqaba, protecting the cultural, historical and marine heritage and implementing sustainable activities to preserve the sites. The MoU was signed within the framework of CROSSDEV – Cultural Routes for Sustainable, Social and economic development in Mediterranean – a 3-year project funded by the European Union through the ENI CBC MED Programme.

Over the next two years, JREDS will contribute to the maintenance and installation of signage and implement continuous clean-up campaigns. JREDS will also conduct a specialized training program for a number of local community members to develop their tourism and archaeological skills, in addition to classes of English language, communication, photography, marketing and social media, sustainable tourism and hospitality.

Moreover, JREDS is organising a social media awareness campaign to promote the beauty of Aqaba through its online Ramadan competition which will take place from 13 April 2021 to 13 May 2021.  The competition targets students from all around the world, either from schools or universities, with the objective to increase knowledge and awareness of less known destinations and experiences offered by Aqaba city.

The objective of the CROSSDEV project is to contribute to the economic and social development in Mediterranean. It is co-funded by the European Union through the ENI CBC MED Programme. CROSSDEV strengthens and enhances sustainable tourism practices, emphasizing common heritage and resources. Specifically, the project intends to increase touristic competitiveness and attractiveness of less-known destinations and rural/depressed areas, adopting the Cultural Routes concept in selected areas of 4 countries: Italy, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine.
