The Ambassador of the European Union to Algeria, H.E. Diego Mellado, welcomed a group of Algerian journalists at the EU Residence for a briefing dedicated to the Pact for the Mediterranean, which was officially launched on 16 October in Brussels. The meeting provided an opportunity to present the main pillars of this new strategic framework, which aims to strengthen cooperation between the European Union and its Southern partners, building on existing initiatives, including Association Agreements.

During the discussion, Ambassador Mellado underlined that the Pact “seeks to build a strategic alliance on the basis of achievements already made,” while recalling “the complementary ties between the European Union and the countries of the South.” He added that the Pact offers both the EU and Algeria an opportunity to deepen their partnership on the basis of mutual trust, respect for sovereignty, and consideration of shared interests. This initiative is part of a joint ambition to promote a more stable, prosperous, and integrated Mediterranean for the benefit of the region’s peoples.
