On 6 October, the European Union, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), celebrated the completion of the rehabilitation of Machareus, one of Jordan’s most remarkable archaeological and historical sites. The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the European Union to Jordan, alongside representatives of the Jordanian government, the Italian Cooperation, and local community leaders.

With a total contribution of €10 million from the European Union, this initiative reflects the EU’s ongoing commitment to preserving Jordan’s rich cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism and local development. The project has supported the conservation of the site’s ancient structures, improved visitor infrastructure, and introduced measures to ensure the protection of the surrounding environment. Beyond heritage preservation, the initiative has created job opportunities for local residents, enhanced tourism services, and empowered communities to actively participate in the management and promotion of their cultural assets. By linking heritage rehabilitation with socio-economic development, the project contributes to both cultural continuity and economic resilience in the region.
