EU-funded COMMON-Med project team participates to a clean-up day in Italy

A cleaning day was organised at Feniglia, Porto Ercole beach in Italy on 4 January 2020. More than 1 000 volunteers, including EU-funded COMMON-Med project team, participated to the event and collected over 1 000 kilos of plastic. Piero Pelù, a famous Italian singer also participated to the cleaning opeartions.

At Riserva Naturale Duna Feniglia, extreme weather conditions are causing a large amount of waste from the sea, especially plastic and microplastic.

COastal Management and MOnitoring Network for tackling marine litter in Mediterranean sea (COMMON) is an Euro-Mediterranean project funded by the EU under the ENI CBC Med programme aiming to support a correct management of marine litter in the Mediterranean Sea with the application of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) principles to the challenge of marine litter, improving knowledge of the phenomenon, enhancing the environmental performance of 5 pilot coastal areas in Italy, Tunisia and Lebanon, and engaging local stakeholders in marine litter management.
