On 2 November, the European Union Delegation to Jordan carried out a series of visits and meetings in Aqaba, reaffirming the EU’s strong and long-standing partnership with Jordan in the areas of security, education, and sustainable development.
As part of ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the EU concluded a €5 million programme with the inauguration of a situation room at the Wadi Araba Border Crossing Point. This marks the completion of nine situation rooms established across Jordan to enhance integrated border management. Building on this success, a new €15 million EU project will further strengthen border operations, coordination, and security infrastructure.
The EU delegation also visited the Aqaba Port and the newly inaugurated EU-funded Operations Room, implemented with the support of UNODC and the Aqaba Container Terminal—a public–private partnership model recognised for its efficiency and commitment to decarbonisation and sustainability.
In the field of education, the team joined the Erasmus+ Information Day for Southern Jordan at the University of Jordan – Aqaba Branch. With around 800 scholarships awarded annually, Jordan remains among the top three countries in the Southern Neighbourhood for Erasmus+ mobility to the EU. Jordan is also one of the main beneficiaries of Erasmus+ Capacity Building projects in higher education, youth, and vocational training, and continues to play a leading role in implementing them.
The EU encouraged Jordanian universities and institutions to explore new opportunities for partnership under the upcoming Erasmus+ Call for Proposals, to be launched in November, covering higher education, youth, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET).
