European citizens view development aid more favourably now than at any time in the past 6 years, according to a recent survey. “Nearly three quarters of respondents (73%) agree that development assistance is an effective way to fight against irregular migration, while 80% of Europeans believe that development is in the EU’s own interest”, according to the barometer survey, the results of which were presented on Monday 29 February 2016 by EU Commissioner Neven Mimica, responsible for international cooperation and development.

These figures show that the vast majority of Europeans hold a positive view about the benefits of international cooperation and development. They reveal an increase in the proportion of people who believe that the fight against poverty in developing countries should be one of the main EU priorities (69%).
