Lawyers, police, prosecutors, and the courts depend on one another to ensure the effective functioning of the justice system. At the same time, they serve as mutual checks to safeguard against abuse and uphold due process. In a session facilitated by EUPOL COPPS advisers and attended by prosecutors and police officers on 10 September in Jericho, Palestinian lawyers shared their perspectives on daily interactions with various actors across the criminal justice chain. This in-depth discussion, which included a focus on early legal representation, was held on the second day of the “Building Bridges” conference, aimed at enhancing collaboration between the security and justice sectors in Palestine. The session enhanced the Mission’s understanding of both the strengths and the challenges faced in the daily operations of the justice system.
On the sidelines of the conference, EUPOL COPPS advisers also raised other topics, such as the importance of prosecuting perpetrators of domestic violence, the value of writing a good quality initial crime report and the need to enhance women representation in the police service. Additionally, the Mission’s Training Adviser delivered a presentation on the training strategy, highlighting the role of training coordinators, the training cycle, and the importance of evaluating trainings.
