The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat, and the EU-funded MED-GEM Network are jointly organising an online webinar titled “Enabling Trade in Green Hydrogen and Derivative Commodities: A Cross-Mediterranean Perspective” on 15 October, from 13:00 to 13:45 CET (15:00 to 15:45 GST).

According to IRENA’s World Energy Transition Outlook, green hydrogen and its derivatives could represent up to 14% of global final energy consumption by 2050. As production costs differ across regions, new trade patterns are emerging, connecting renewable-rich countries with those seeking to decarbonise their industries. In this context, the webinar will explore how international frameworks and regional cooperation can foster cross-Mediterranean trade in hydrogen and its derivatives, supporting both global decarbonisation efforts and regional economic integration.

The session will feature opening remarks by Frank Wouters, Director of the MED-GEM Network, followed by interventions from James Walker, Team Lead for Renewable Gases at IRENA, Svetlana Chobanova, Legal Officer at the World Trade Organization, and Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, Deputy Team Leader of the MED-GEM Network. A Q&A session will follow. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how global trade rules, regional collaboration, and investment readiness can turn hydrogen ambitions into concrete trade flows across the Mediterranean.
