In recent years, Mediterranean countries have faced increasingly severe wildfires, threatening lives, biodiversity, and local economies. The EU-funded project MEDFIREWISE aims to help communities adapt to this growing challenge by promoting a new culture of “living with fire.” Through cross-border cooperation, the project will develop FireWise communities — neighbourhoods trained and equipped to prevent and respond to wildfires — while testing innovative tools for risk mapping, early warning, and sustainable land management.
By connecting experts, authorities, and local populations in Spain, Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Türkiye, MEDFIREWISE seeks to reduce vulnerability, enhance preparedness, and foster shared responsibility for fire resilience across the region. The project is led by the Pau Costa Foundation (Spain), an organisation internationally recognised for its expertise in fire ecology and community-based prevention. Together with eight Mediterranean partners, it will run pilot actions, training programmes, and awareness campaigns to turn knowledge into action on the ground.
MEDFIREWISE started on 15 September 2025 and will run for 3 years. The project, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, has a total budget of €2,700,000, of which €2,400,000 is provided by the EU.
