“Right now, in Europe, the very idea of human rights is coming under attack”, Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, said at a UN high-level meeting in Geneva on Tuesday 1 March 2016.

Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council, Jagland called for “collective action on migration guided by common European standards”. It is “a time of heightened anxiety and fear”, he declared, adding: “States cannot simply opt in and out of their international obligations as they see fit”.
