In recent days several rubber boats carrying hundreds of migrants set sail towards Europe. This increased flow of migrants required the effort of all the assets in the area, under the coordination of the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.

In full accordance with the International Law of the Sea and Refugee Conventions, EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia participated in the rescue operations, rescuing 129 migrants with the UK ship Enterprise on Sunday 27 March 2016, and 105 with the German auxiliary ship FRANKFURT on Tuesday 29 March 2016.

EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA was launched in June 2015 and entered its second phase last October. The Operation has contributed to saving more than 11 700 people, 61 people have been reported as possible smugglers and 100 vessels have been confiscated from illegal organisations.
