The EU missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah have expressed their serious concern at the death in custody of detainee Ahmad Ezz Halaweh, allegedly at the hands of members of the Palestinian Security Forces, on 23 August.

“The incident raises serious concerns over respect for fundamental human rights by the Palestinian Security Forces in the context of the arrest, detention and questioning of suspects, as well as the implementation of the UN Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officials”, said a statement issued today.

The EU welcomed the decision to launch an immediate investigation into the death of Mr Halaweh, which it expects to be conducted “in a full and transparent manner in accordance with the law. We trust that all those responsible will be held accountable for their actions and in this regard we commend the statement by Prime Minister Hamdallah that all necessary action will be taken.” (EU Neighbourhood Info)
