The European Union Police and Rule of Law Mission (EUPOL COPPS) facilitated a workshop for the Palestinian Ministry of Justice, held in Ramallah on 30 November, designed to create a clear mechanism for rehabilitating criminals convicted of less serious, non-violent offences who wish to be integrated into the society.
Measures discussed at the workshop include circumstances under which a criminal record might be wiped clean, the appropriate period that a criminal conviction should appear on someone’s record, ICT requirements for storing the data of convicts and support that the authorities might be able to provide in order to promote rehabilitation.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the High Judicial Council, the Public Prosecution, and the Security Forces Judiciary.
EUPOL COPPS is the European Union Co-ordinating Office for Palestinian Police Support. The aim of the Mission is to contribute to the establishment of sustainable and effective policing arrangements and to advise Palestinian counterparts on criminal justice and rule of law related aspects under Palestinian ownership.
