Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini following her phone call with UN SRSG Ghassan Salamé on the situation in Libya.

The escalating violence in Tripoli is further undermining the already fragile situation in Libya.

We call on all parties to respond positively to the UN’s call for an urgent mediation meeting tomorrow and to cease hostilities immediately. This is what I discussed with the UN Special Representative Ghassan Salamé over the phone today. I also assured him of the EU’s continuing full support for his work in the current days and also in bringing about a lasting solution to the crisis in Libya. Only a political process can bring a comprehensive, stable and sustainable solution to the crisis in Libya.

The European Union will continue to work with the United Nations and other international and regional partners to strengthen Libya’s sovereign institutions, to help implement elections based on an adequate and solid constitutional framework, and create professional security forces under civilian control.
