UN Secretary General Special Representative for Libya, Ghassan Salamé, has announced the postponement of the National Conference due to the deteriorating security situation in Libya, while still a few days ago many Libyans were looking forward to join the path for peace in their country.
The European Union fully supports and shares the UN Special Representative’s call upon all parties to agree on an immediate ceasefire, to allow humanitarian access and to return to the negotiating table.
We remain fully committed to supporting the UN’s work in Libya, including the organisation of the National Conference as soon as conditions allow.
The EU continues to reach out to all relevant parties and regional players to help deliver on a peaceful transition responsibly and in the interest of all Libyans.
