The EU-funded project SwitchMed (Switching to more sustainable consumption and production in the Mediterranean) presented the tourism chapter of the Action Plan for sustainable consumption and production (SCP) for the Mediterranean at the Annual workshop of MEDPAN, the network of Marine Protected Areas managers in the Mediterranean, attended by close to 150 participants from 19 Mediterranean countries.

The two-day workshop held on 25-26 November in Sardinia (Italy) aimed at sharing experience on the development of sustainable tourism in protected areas. A total of 32 working groups exchanged their views in sessions that revolved around the 4 main themes identified for the workshop: involvement of private operators and institutional players, public-private partnerships enhancement, carrying capacity and visitors’ management, tourism plan establishment and implementation.

The event was organised by MedPAN in collaboration with the MEET and S&T Med projects, funded by the European Union in the framework of the cross-border cooperation in the Mediterranean basin (CBCMed) and in cooperation with other organisations around the Mediterranean.

The SWITCH-MED sustainable consumption and production programme aims to promote a switch of the Mediterranean economies towards sustainable consumption and production patterns and green economy, including low emission development, through demonstration and dissemination of methods that improve resource and energy efficiency. It also seeks to minimise the environmental impacts associated to the life cycle of products and services, and, as opportune, to promote renewable energy. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
