The EU is pledging to support Tunisia in implementing a programme to reform its prison administration and to reinforce its capacities. For this purpose, a project has been launched with a EUR 1.85-million budget for a period of 30 months.

A kick-off meeting was held on Wednesday January 20 in Tunis, attended by Tunisian Justice Minister Omar Mansour and Laura Baeza, the EU Ambassador to Tunisia, according to a statement issued by the EU delegation in Tunisia.

Designed within the framework of the “twinning” programme (mentoring and assistance) under the Neighbourhood Policy, the programme will be implemented by two Member States – France and Germany. Specialised civil servants from both countries will be in charge of this assistance and training assignment.

This project is part of a series of coordinated actions being implemented as part of the Justice Reform Support Program (JRSP). Other operations will be launched in the same sector in the near future. 55 projects have been carried out in Tunisia to date as part of this twinning tool.
