The Union for the Mediterranean’s Social and Civil Affairs and Higher Education and Research divisions co-organised a 3-hour online workshop centered on Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) in Higher Education institutions and STEM. Its primary objective was to delve into the technical intricacies involved in formulating effective GEPs, providing a platform to share good practices and address challenges specific to the Mediterranean context.

Over 100 people took part in the workshop, including representatives from the UfM Jordanian Co-presidency, the EU Commission, and academics from France, Spain, Greece, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and Tunisia, as well as entrepreneurs with an academic background in Engineering, AI and robotics.

During the discussion, several references were made to the UfM Members States’ commitments to gender equality in Education in the framework of the 2022 Ministerial on Strengthening the role of women in society as well as the outcomes of the regional consultation launched in 2022 in view of the UfM Ministerial on Higher Education.

Various speakers provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with developing, implementing and monitoring GEPs in universities and beyond. It was recalled that GEPs can focus on empowering women within the academic environment by promoting equal access to education, leadership opportunities, research funding, and career progression.
