On 11 January, EU leadership gathered in the Bulgarian capital Sofia for the inauguration ceremony of the country’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Bulgarian Presidency began on 1 January 2018 and will last 6 months as per usual practice at the Council of the EU. Before Bulgaria it was Estonia that presided in the Council.

In his speech in Sofia, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk welcomed the priorities set for the 6-month Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the European Union.

“Europe is too big to be monolithic and yet too small to be divided,” said the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, at the opening ceremony of the Bulgarian Presidency. “This is why the motto of our Presidency is ‘United We Stand Strong’.”

This is the first time that Bulgaria has held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union since it joined the EU in 2007.
