A recent survey conducted by the SWITCH to Circular Economy Value Chains project, in collaboration with Chatham House and IPSOS Mori, reveals a significant concern among Moroccan citizens regarding plastic pollution. The survey, which engaged over 1,000 individuals from six regions, found that 94% of respondents believe in the importance of properly disposing of waste plastics, surpassing even concerns about climate change. With 70% strongly agreeing on the need for effective plastic waste management, the survey highlights Morocco’s increasing environmental consciousness.

Despite this, the term “circular economy” remains unfamiliar to many. However, practices like repair and reuse are deeply embedded in Moroccan culture, with 75% of participants regularly repairing broken items. Furthermore, 94% expressed willingness to separate plastics from general waste, signaling strong public readiness for sustainable actions. Morocco’s government has set ambitious goals, such as increasing plastics recycling by 70% and formalizing 50% of informal waste picker roles by 2030. As Morocco navigates these challenges, the survey offers valuable insights into public sentiment and opportunities for a just transition toward a circular economy.
