In Egypt, a massive awareness campaign “Waai Programme for Community Development”. WAAI ( وعي ) was launched by the Ministry of Social Solidarity (MoSS) in collaboration with the EU and the UNDP.
Twelve priority issues are central to the campaign and communicated as its key messages to its core targets: women and vulnerable groups. Some of those priorities include: economic empowerment, education and literacy, citizenship, illegal immigration, maternal and child health, population growth, harmful practices including female genital mutilation, child marriage, anti-drug trafficking.
“The EU is proud to support the Egyptian Government efforts under The Waai Programme to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against girls and women” (Christian Berger EU Ambassador to Egypt). EU funded programmes support a wide range of areas including access to education, school feeding, child protection and development, street children, and girls’ empowerment, and protection from child marriage, female genital mutilation among other issues.
