Moroccan respondents answered correctly on some of the questions testing their knowledge of the EU, including on whether the euro is the common currency of the EU, to which 83% said yes, followed by whether the EU is a union of 27 European countries, to which 61% answered yes.

In Morocco, 62% of respondents have a positive image of the EU, and 77% believe that the EU has a positive relationship with their country. Morocco is the leading country in terms of positive perception of the relationship with the EU. 72% also believe that the partnership with the EU is important

Moroccan respondents associated the EU the most with equality gender equality coming in first (81%), followed by Human Rights (80%), Freedom of Speech (75%), Democracy (75%) and Peace and Security (72%).

Respondents were most aware of the EU’s cooperation on Human Rights (54%) followed by economic reform and support to SMEs, and support for refugees and displaced people. 47% are aware of the EU’s support towards the COVID-19 pandemic

Respondents in Morocco believe that they benefited the most from EU support in tourism (44%), Trade and Investments (29%), Human Rights (26%),  Economic Development (24%), and Health (22%). Respondents wish for the EU to be more engaged in supporting the tourism sector (75%), followed by Trade and Investments (62%) and Human Rights (57%).

This survey – part of a wave of opinion polls carried out in eight southern Neighbourhood partner countries – was conducted in Morocco between July and September 2021, with 1,000 people consulted in face-to-face interviews. Respondents were asked about their general perceptions of the EU and the values with which it is associated, about EU relations with their country, and the impact of EU financial support, including in supporting their country’s response to the COVID-19 crisis. The surveys also look at preferred sources of information, how people feel about their personal situation and the situation in their country, and their expectations for the future.
