The European Union (EU) Delegation to Egypt organized a beach clean-up in Alexandria on 15 September 2018 on the International Coastal Clean-up Day, in collaboration with Alexandria Governorate and Greenish. Around 300 volunteers participated in the event, including staff of the European Union Delegation to Egypt, representatives of the EU member states, and members of local NGOs and initiatives concerned with environment.
Deputy Ambassador of the EU Ms. Sandra De Waele referred in her welcoming notes to the fact that 85% of the beach litter is made of plastic which takes many years to decompose. “Today’s event is a way to encourage everyone of us to take action against plastic pollution which has adverse effects on marine life, the environment and our health,” said De Waele. She asked participants to further promote this message amongst their families and friends.
In the run-up to the event, the EU and Greenish launched a campaign on social media to raise awareness on the importance of recycling and waste sorting, how to minimize waste of energy and water resources, the risks of plastic to marine life, and how to reduce the use of plastic materials.
