In recent years economic growth in Algeria has paradoxically had ‘negative effects on the environment and especially on water resources, due to insufficient support for the environment’, an Algerian official states, referring to the ‘Water II‘ programme with the EU.

Statements published on the website of the EU Delegation in Algiers quote the Director of Sanitation and Protection of the Environment at the Ministry of Water Resources and Environment. ‘Pollution risks being the primary  cause of water shortage of in a semi-arid country like Algeria, hence the need for greater protection of water resources. In an article quoting him, the official says, ‘A sanitation policy is therefore necessary as an essential imperative to manage this risk.’

He stresses that the ‘Water II’ programme has the ambition of establishing ‘the most complete view possible of all actual and potential flood risks at national level.’
