From 23 to 25 November, Brussels will host the first European Journalism Symposium on the theme of “Being a journalist in Europe”. Jointly organised by the IHECS and the French NGO Journalisme & Citoyenneté [Journalism & Citizenship], the event will bring together all communication professions for a free reflection on the conditions required for quality journalism in Europe.
On the programme for this first edition in Brussels (IHECS): an exhibition tracing the origins of modern journalism, meetings and dialogue, with appearances from personalities such as the Russian Dmitry Mouratov, joint winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize and Věra Jourová, Vice President of the European Commission, as well as an evening on the subject of Ukraine in partnership with Reporters without Borders.
Subjects covered will include recent legislation on the media space adopted by the EU through the Media Freedom Act, press coverage of the climate emergency and migration and the challenges related to of gender, diversity and the intersectionality of approaches. “Accessible to all, the programme for this event has been designed to collectively face up to the changes in our democratic societies”, explains Jean-François Raskin, General Manager of the IHECS.
The European Journalism Symposium will complement the Assises du Journalisme events held in France since 2007, and in Tunis since 2018, run by Journalisme & Citoyenneté.
