The EU and Egypt inaugurated, on Wednesday 30 March 2016, the third Egyptian Solid Waste Management Forum. The Forum is organised by the EU-funded National Solid Waste Management Programme, which is implemented jointly by Germany’s KfW Development Bank and GIZ, the German international cooperation organisation, in cooperation with the European Commission, which is funding the programme with EUR 20 million. The remaining EUR 41 million will be provided by KfW, GIZ and the Government of Egypt according to a statement from the EU Delegation in Cairo.

Ambassador James Moran, Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt explained the benefit of solid waste management by saying that there would be less waste to deal with and limited resources would be put to better use. Moran also noted that the EU is pleased to support Egypt in its efforts to “improve solid waste management as a key step towards a circular economy.”
