On 10 and 11 April, MEDREG’s Greek member – the Hellenic Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste and Water (RAAEY) – welcomed its Egyptian counterpart – the Gas Regulatory Authority (GasReg) – in Athens for a two-day study visit on “Energy Transition Initiatives in EU Countries and Gas Distribution Code for a Low-Carbon Gas Sector”. The Egyptian delegation engaged with RAAEY representatives and other relevant stakeholders to learn from their experiences and best practices in retail gas market regulation, decarbonising initiatives in the gas value chain, energy efficiency and renewable gas integration, focusing on bio-methane and hydrogen.
This visit provided a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and mutual understanding of the challenges and opportunities in enhancing sustainable energy systems, with a focus on regulatory frameworks and innovative solutions for the low-carbon gas sector. Following in-depth discussions with RAAEY and meetings with key Greek gas stakeholders, including gas suppliers, distributors, renewable gas producers, and industry experts, the GasReg delegation gained actionable insights and identified areas where Egyptian initiatives could benefit from the Greek experience.
Looking ahead and in order to facilitate post-visit knowledge exchange, technical assistance, and joint initiatives in energy transition regulations, the two Regulatory Authorities, represented by GasReg Executive Chairman Eng. Mohamed AbdelAziz and RAAEY President Assoc. Professor Athanasios Dagoumas, signed a Cooperation Protocol which provides a framework to enhance future collaboration mechanisms between GasReg and RAAEY.
