The EU and Jordan hold joint Security Cluster meeting

The European Union and the Government of Jordan concluded yesterday the joint Security Cluster meeting, which included the 8th meeting of the Subcommittee on Justice and Security. The meeting asserted the need to further enhance cooperation in the security area, including counter-terrorism, countering violent extremism and the financing of terrorism, border control, to mitigate the impact of the increasingly challenging regional circumstances and to reinforce the rule of law.

The meeting was co-chaired by Erika Ferrer, Head of Middle East and North Africa Division of the European External Action Service, and Daifallah al-Fayez, Director for Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan.

During the meeting, representatives from the EU and Jordan discussed recent security developments in the region. The discussions also focused on key priority areas of regional and bilateral cooperation, such as counter-terrorism, preventing and countering violent extremism and financing of terrorism. They also raised the issue of integrated border management, aviation security, cybersecurity in line with international conventions and good practice.

Participants exchanged views on combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism, cooperation between justice and home affairs agencies, judicial cooperation in criminal and civil matters, as well as cooperation on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear risk mitigation and in the framework of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy. The EU and Jordan further agreed to boost collaboration on disaster management and civil protection, which has been a key area of cooperation.

The meeting concluded the current cycle of Subcommittee meetings held in the framework of the implementation of the EU-Jordan Partnership Priorities. It will be followed by the EU-Jordan Association Committee on 31 May.
