TunisiaEU Beach Clean Up: European Ambassadors clean Israel’s beaches
On 20 September, as part of the SAIL Tel Aviv festival, the EU supported a massive beach clean-up in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Together with partners at the Tel Aviv Municipality, Atidim, NGOs EcoOcean and Plastic Free Israel, European Ambassadors and many diplomats posted in Israel led a clean-up of beaches in Jaffa to raise awareness of the environmental impact caused by marine litter.
EU Ambassador to Israel, Mr. Emanuele Giaufret said, “The crisis facing our oceans is real. Around 95% of the marine litter ends up at the bottom of our ocean, causing damage to the seabed, fauna and flora, meaning the issue is far more acute than we are able to see on our beaches. It is devastating to witness the impact of marine litter, including here in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. The EU is spearheading global efforts to reduce and avoid plastic pollution, including marine litter by introducing new rules, including banning single-use plastic items by 2021 and by achieving a 90% collection target for plastic bottles by 2029. It’s our common interest to protect it so today, together with Israeli partners and students, the EU diplomatic community is here to do exactly that”.
