Following the meeting and discussions with the State Councillor and Foreign Affairs Minister of China, High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell made the following statement concerning Libya:

“Of course we have talked about Libya. We are both well aware of the latest events. Concerning the peace initiative taken by Egypt, we agreed on the fact that all the initiatives that are in line with the Berlin process, which seek to establish peace and stability in Libya, are positive. Therefore, we welcome this initiative, because it is not in contradiction with the Berlin process; it rather reinforces it.

We must repeat one more time that there is no alternative to a political solution that reflects the conclusions of the Berlin conference, as they were confirmed by a resolution [2510] of the Security Council [of the United Nations] which was also decided with the agreement and participation of China.

We must seize all the opportunities to obtain a ceasefire and to resume the [military] talks under the 5+5 format [and under the auspices of the United Nations]. [..] There is no other alternative. I think that on this issue we fully agree with our Chinese colleagues.»
