The EU Council of Ministers met in Brussels on Monday 14 March 2016 to discuss a number of important issues, including Libya, Syria, the issue of migrants, and relations with Russia and Iran. EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said in a statement that it had been a long Council meeting, at which important issues had been discussed. “Let me say that it was also a very good Council,” she said, adding that it had been extremely constructive, with Member States reaching united positions on all the issues discussed.

With respect to Libya, Mogherini noted that the information given by the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General Martin Kobler was well received, and echoed fundamental elements of the European position. On the Middle East peace process, the High Representative said that she had updated the ministers on the state of play of the work of the Quartet. She also noted that French Minister presented ideas for creating synergies and working together in support of a consolidated European position, an approach that was welcomed by all the Member States.
