The European Union in Egypt together with International Organization for Migration launched the regional “Joint Initiative For Migrant Protection And Reintegration in North Africa”.
The initiative assists migrants who decide to willingly return to their countries of origin to do so in a safe and dignified way with full respect of international human rights principles and, in particular, the principle of non-refoulement.
Since the launch of the Joint initiative, the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa has supported IOM Egypt in its assistance to more than 35000 migrants stranded along the main migration routes in Africa who have decided to return to their countries of origin. Once back, they and other returning migrants are given help to make a fresh start in their communities.
