EUPOL COPPS is playing a very important role in contributing to build the institutions of the Palestinian state and supporting legal reform, said Dr. Ammar Dwaik, Director-General of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR), when meeting with the Mission’s leader Karin Limdal and her Justice, Gender and Human Rights advisors, on 27 August in Ramallah. The purpose of the brainstorming was the exchange of best practices, including on legal reform, legislation, rights of detainees and fair trial.
“Upholding the rule of law is important for building the pillars of the state,” said Dr. Dwaik during the meeting. Ms. Limdal agreed and underlined how for the Mission “the issue of legal reform is of crucial importance in institution building”.
“Good cooperation with ICHR is essential to fulfil our mandate. Our respective organisations agreed today to significantly intensify synergies for the benefit of Palestinians and the protection of their human rights,” said Jurgen Wellner, EUPOL COPPS Head of Justice Section.
ICHR is one of the key counterparts of the Mission. It was established in 1993 to monitor and report on human rights violations and to ensure that Palestinian laws and legislation meet the requirements for safeguarding human rights.
