The EU Delegation in Jordan launched today the new programme “Enhanced Support to Democratic Governance in Jordan” with the objective of supporting Jordan’s reform process towards consolidation of deep democracy and to promote inclusiveness of policy and decision making processes, focusing in particular on the participation of women and youth.
The programme will have four main components: Parliamentary Strengthening, Electoral Assistance, Support to the Political Party System and Support to Civil Society in contributing to democratic governance
The implementation duration will be four years, covering the full legislative term of the Parliament and the entire electoral cycle, providing crucial support for the upcoming local and governorate council elections in August 2017 as well as for the next cycle of elections in 2020 and 2021.
With a total budget of EUR 17,7 million, the programme is funded by the European Commission (EUR 15 million), Spain, (EUR 2 million) and by the project implementer, a consortium of European specialised organisations led by the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES) (EUR 0.7 million).
The EU and Spanish Ambassadors presented the programme at a launching ceremony in Amman on Wednesday 24 May 2017 with the participation of the heads or acting heads of the Jordanian House of Representatives, the Independent Electoral Commission and the Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, and the presence of Members of Parliament, government officials and representatives from Civil Society.
