TunisiaLebanon: The European Union and MACAM Unveil the “Human Rights Wall of Contemplation”
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the European Union and the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum (MACAM) unveiled the completed “Human Rights Wall of Contemplation” to the public.
A 60m long “Human Rights Wall of Contemplation” shows street art and graffiti panels by 12 artists coming from all over the world: Estonia, Germany, Jordan, Iraq, Italy, Lebanon, Mexico, Senegal, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and Ukraine.
Each graffiti artwork is inspired by an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and depicts a theme such as gender equality, racism and non-discrimination, freedom of speech, the right to life, liberty and security, among others.
“Human rights are the very heart of our work in Lebanon”, said Ambassador of the European Union Ralph Tarraf at the unveiling ceremony. “We engage in a wide range of human rights related topics in Lebanon, some of which you will see depicted on the wall such as the fight against ill-treatment and torture, women’s rights, children’s rights and freedom of speech”.
