The European Union Delegation to Libya issued yesterday the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission and the Head of Mission of Canada:
We are committed to defending freedom of the press and freedom of association. We are concerned by the news that Mr Ridha Fheel Al-Boom, a journalist and a human rights defender, was arrested in Maitiga and has been held since Saturday night.
We are concerned that Mr Fheel Al-Boom is the subject of yet another case of the arbitrary detention of a journalist and a human rights defender, in violation of Libya’s obligation under international human rights law. We take note of the statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on the case and we are following up with relevant authorities to advocate for the prompt release of Mr Fheel Al-Boom or his referral to a judicial authority in compliance with Libyan law. We call once more for the respect of the freedom of the press and freedom of association in Libya.
