Every 28 November, the Day of the Mediterranean, an initiative of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), reminds us of the values that define our region — cooperation, shared identity, and collective resilience. This day celebrates the cultural and environmental richness of the Mediterranean basin, while emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions to address common challenges. From climate change to biodiversity loss, the region faces pressures that no single country can tackle alone — and wildfires are among the most urgent.
MedFireWise reflects this spirit of shared purpose. Through the collaboration of seven Mediterranean regions — spanning Greece, Spain, Italy, Türkiye, Tunisia, Algeria, and Lebanon — the project is building a common approach to reducing wildfire risks. It promotes Nature-Based Solutions, from prescribed burning to silvopasture and adaptive land management, tailored to each landscape’s needs.
What truly defines MedFireWise is its ability to bring science, field experience, and community knowledge together across borders. This collective effort captures the essence of the Day of the Mediterranean: working side by side to protect our region and strengthen its resilience for the future.
On this symbolic day, MedFireWise celebrates the unity that drives its mission — proving that when the Mediterranean acts as one, it grows stronger, wiser, and more resilient.
