On October 30th, 2025, the Land and Natural Resources Program at the University of Balamand (UOB), in collaboration with the Lebanon Reforestation Initiative (LRI), organized a workshop in Hrar, Akkar, titled “Reducing Wildfire Risks: Assessing Needs and Exploring Sustainable Solutions.” The event brought together local authorities, Civil Defense representatives, first responders, and NGOs to exchange experiences and identify pathways for reducing wildfire risks in northern Lebanon.
During the workshop, Dr. George Mitri, Director of the Land and Natural Resources Program at UOB, presented the MedFireWise Project’s vision and objectives, emphasizing how nature-based and community-driven approaches — such as prescribed burning and silvopasture — can strengthen the Mediterranean’s resilience to wildfires while promoting sustainable land management.
Participants highlighted the urgent need for scientific support, community engagement, and long-term collaboration between institutions and local actors. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the forests of Akkar, which represent one of Lebanon’s most biodiverse and fire-prone regions. This initiative marks a significant step forward in MedFireWise’s mission to build a Mediterranean model of wildfire prevention, connecting science, policy, and local knowledge in a shared effort to safeguard both people and ecosystems.
