Representatives from nine public service broadcasters from the Southern Mediterranean met in Beirut on 12 and 13 May for the second phase of a peer-to-peer programme, supported by the EU-funded MedMedia project and organised in collaboration with the Permanent Conference of Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators (COPEAM) with the aim of improving internal training policies and resources.

The nine-month programme offers training managers a forum for developing internal strategies with a particular focus on ways in which capacity-building activities can address the digital transition. Held during COPEAM’s 2017 General Assembly which was hosted by Télé Liban, the workshop assessed progress made since the start of the exchanges which were launched in Amman in February. It brought together representatives from Télé Liban, Radio Liban, the Palestine Broadcasting Corporation, Jordan Radio and Television, the Egyptian Radio and Television Union, Tunisian National Radio, Tunisian Public Television, Algerian National Radio and Morocco’s 2M TV channel.

The initiative to enhance internal training policies at national broadcasters will end in September with a meeting at the headquarters of the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) in Tunis with a view to raising awareness of the pivotal role ASBU is playing in the field of professional training for broadcasters.

The EU-funded MedMedia project aims to create an enabling environment for media reforms in the Southern Mediterranean region. It is part of the €17 million EU programme “Media and culture for development in the Southern Mediterranean” which aims at supporting the media and culture reform processes in the region.

MedMedia focuses on media legislation, regulation, programming, strategy and leadership with a view to helping state media fulfil their public service mandate and compete with the commercial sector. It will also work to build public trust by strengthening the media’s role as an independent watchdog and a forum for democratic debate.
