On 29 August, NAWAMED project will take part in ‘Crossing Stories: The Role of EU Funds in Supporting Visual Arts and Cinema‘, an event organized by the Interreg Italy–Croatia Programme at the Veneto Region’s permanent venue in the Hotel Excelsior Lido during the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, one of the world’s leading showcases of cinema. The event will spotlight innovative EU-funded projects that use cinema, visual storytelling, and immersive media to communicate values, heritage, and cooperation across borders. NAWAMED will contribute by presenting its short film “Gocce di Rugiada” (“Drops of Dew”), which has been selected by several international environmental film festivals. The film narrates the project’s journey in promoting green walls and façades as nature-based solutions to treat and reuse grey water — an urgent challenge in the Mediterranean region. Through its participation in the Venice International Film Festival, NAWAMED seeks to raise awareness of nature-based solutions and share how transnational cooperation can support practical responses to pressing environmental challenges across the Mediterranean region.

NAWAMED (Nature-Based Solutions for Domestic Water Reuse in Mediterranean Countries) aims to change the way cities manage water. By integrating low-cost, innovative treatment systems -such as green walls and wetlands- into buildings and urban settings, NAWAMED demonstrates how non-conventional water resources like greywater can be safely reused, reducing reliance on fresh water. Ended in 2023, NAWAMED benefited the owners and managers of the 8 pilot sites, over 450 practitioners (engineers, architects, etc.), construction companies, university students as well as 50 staff of local and regional authorities. NAWAMED is implemented as part of the ENI CBC MED Programme, now known as the Interreg NEXT MED Programme for the 2021-2027 period.
