Public consultation in the law-drafting process is a key component of democratic governance. It allows citizens and civil society organisations to contribute to proposed laws before they are finalised. To further enhance the capabilities of members of the Legal Affairs Unit at the Palestinian Council of Ministers, EUPOL COPPS organised a workshop for eight members of the Unit from 9 to 10 April in Jericho.
The workshop, which included a presentation and interactive activities, provided practical tools and a methodology that will enable the Legal Affairs Unit to develop structured, predictable and meaningful consultation processes, ensuring that legislative drafting is transparent, inclusive and responsive to the needs of the Palestinian society. The session covered best international practices and addressed local challenges. The training included hands-on simulation exercises, giving participants the opportunity to design and role-play a consultation process, and to provide peer feedback and identify lessons. The Jericho training aims to support law-drafting that results in laws that are well-informed, balanced, and reflect the needs and concerns of the public.
