As part of its aim to promote inclusion in societies of the southern Mediterranean countries, the EU-funded Net-Med Youth project launched a new series of encounters that promote the mainstreaming of youth with disabilities in society with a first workshop held in Lebanon under the title “Empowering Youth and Local Communities on Leadership and Advocacy for the Rights of Young Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).”
The workshop was meant as a platform for youth to raise awareness and examine proposals for their local policy-planners to make the public space accessible to all. “The social inclusion of young persons with disabilities is among our priorities,” says Mona El Zoghbi, Coordinator of NET-MED Youth in Lebanon. “
The workshop acted as a constructive encounter and training of youth from different parts of Lebanon to become leaders and advocates for the rights of PWDs (especially youth) in their local communities. Not only that, youth would identify key priority areas of action that could be included in the National Youth Policy Action Plan. Participants examined the status quo and the different barrier-free concepts for living spaces, particularly, the approach known as Universal Design.
NET-MED Youth aims to improve the access and effective participation of young people in mainstreaming their priorities into legislation and national planning in the Southern Mediterranean Partner countries. Specifically, it aims to build the capacities of youth organisations in ENP South countries and to enhance networking among them in order to reduce the fragmentation of efforts and harness the collective potential of young people in achieving democratic transition towards active citizenship, political participation and social inclusion.
