Interreg NEXT MED is proud to announce that NAWAMED, a project funded under the ENI CBC Med Programme (the predecessor of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme), is a finalist in the 2025 REGIOSTARS Awards, the European Commission’s annual competition that highlights the most impactful and inclusive EU-funded regional development projects. NAWAMED is the first project from the Programme to become a finalist in the REGIOSTARS Award.
Selected from a record 266 applications across Europe, NAWAMED was honored in the “A Green Europe” category for its innovative approach to sustainable water management and its promotion of cross-border cooperation throughout the Mediterranean region. In a region where water scarcity constitutes a major challenge, NAWAMED (“Nature Based Solutions for Domestic Water Reuse in Mediterranean Countries”) has demonstrated how buildings can become water producers instead of consumers.
In schools and universities across Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Malta, the project installed living green walls and vegetal façades that treat greywater from sinks and showers through plants and natural filters. The purified water is then reused for toilets or irrigation, cutting potable water use by up to 30% while greening community spaces, boosting biodiversity, and engaging youth and decision-makers in rethinking water use. NAWAMED highlights the potential of nature-based solutions to reduce potable water consumption, offering a replicable model for sustainable urban water management.
