I would like to wish the people of Libya Eid Mubarak.
This year’s holiday yet again falls as thousands of Libyans continue to the effects of the ongoing war which continues to cause death, destruction and displacement, as the country grapples with the covid pandemic.
For the second successive year, I call on all those holding the reins of power to respect the spirit of Eid al-Fitr and allow the observance of this sacred holiday in peace, reconciliation and compassion, which are the essence of Islam. Eid should be a time of joy and celebration; a time to make peace with all neighbours, relatives and friends, and resolve differences.
It is time that the endless calls for an end to the fighting and a return to dialogue be heeded. This is the only way to resolve the ongoing conflict. The past year of this senseless war has shown that.
