TunisiaTunisia: EU deconstructs gender stereotypes
The Tunis Forum on Gender Equality held on 24-26 April 2019 hosted an awareness-raising workshop for children and teenagers aged 3 to 18 organised in the framework of the EU-funded South Programme III.
Accompanied by teachers and through a proactive approach, nearly 80 children and teenagers participated in artistic workshops aiming at deconstructing gender stereotypes and at encouraging them to reconsider the roles traditionally assigned to girls and boys by society and to revalorise both genders.
As underlined in the Council of Europe Gender Equality Strategy 2018-2023, structural inequalities and gender stereotypes faced by both women and men, girls and boys, still remain in educational and childcare systems. Teaching children and teenagers to be aware of these inequalities and to deconstruct stereotypes is also a way to allow them to be something other than what is imposed by gender representations and plays a preventing role in the face of sexist speech, of hate speech even, as well as of violence towards women.
