On Thursday, 11 February 2016, the EU and Tunisia have launched two new “twinning” operations in Tunis. One focuses on the reinforcement of the capacities of the Tunisian Ministry of Justice and its jurisdictions, and the other on training the justice system personnel.

A press release of the EU delegation in Tunis, distributed on Thursday, specifies that EUR 40 million has been dedicated to the Justice reform programme (PARJ) from 2012 until 2020. This gives EU the status of leading partner for Tunisia regarding its judicial reforms.

The “twinning” is a support for the institutional capacity reinforcement programmes undertaken by the country.

“The Tunisian judicial system faces a double challenge in terms of modernisation and efficiency”, Laura Baeza, the EU ambassador in Tunis, emphasized. “During these years of transition, and especially with the increase of security tensions, the number of judicial, criminal and civil cases has continued to rise, overwhelming tribunals with more than one million new cases every year”, she added.
