Co-chaired by EU High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Jordan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the 4th edition of the Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) took place on 10 October 2019, in Barcelona, Spain.
“ We cannot be multilateral alone. The only way to do it, is to invest in partnerships and friendships and most importantly to invest in the strength of your friends, of your neighbours, of your partners. I believe this is exactly what we are doing here. The Union for the Mediterranean is an investment in multilateralism and regional cooperation. It is an open channel among governments that may not always share the same views – and I understand this is quite an understatement -, but share the same region – and if there is one thing you cannot change it is geography – and many of the same interests. It is a space for dialogue, in times when unilateralism too often prevails.”, declared Mogherini.
During the Regional Forum, the UfM presented the preliminary conclusions of the first comprehensive scientific report on the impact of climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean region, untitled “MedECC – Risks associated to climate and environmental changes in the mediterranean region”. The document was developed by a network of over 80 scientists from across the Euro-Mediterranean area named MedECC – Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change.
