The EU funded “Water and Environment Support-Biodiversity and Climate Action (WES-BCA) in the Neighbourhood South region” project held its online regional Workshop “Advancing Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus (WEFE) with emphasis on governance, policy and institutional arrangements: Towards an action framework” on the 19th of January 2026.

During the Workshop, key findings and recommendations from the WEFE Nexus background document, prepared by the WES-BCA experts, assessing WEFE policy, governance and institutional integration in Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco and validated through an earlier consultation involving the three pilot countries, were reviewed. Based on this work, priority-oriented inputs and insights for advancing WEFE Nexus implementation were identified and discussed.

In addition, the alignment of national WEFE policy advancements with the Mediterranean WEFE Strategy, as well as informing the development of a Framework for Action under the draft Strategy, drawing on the validated findings and recommendations from the pilot countries, were the main topics of dedicated sessions. This online event was structured as a facilitated regional consultation, combining targeted presentations with moderated plenary discussions to ensure focused, inclusive, and outcome-oriented exchanges.

More than 60 key stakeholders involved in WEFE Nexus policy development and implementation, such as policy makers and public administrators , technical experts and planners representing the WEFE sectors from the partner countries as well as a broader range of regional stakeholders across the Mediterranean,  participated in the Workshop during which best practices and institutional innovations related to WEFE were shared.

Through an extensive and productive dialogue, the participants identified shared priority areas across countries, and highlighted key capacity-building needs relevant to advancing WEFE Nexus implementation in the Mediterranean.
