The Arab Spring put forward a number of demands, headed by democracy, social justice and equality for all citizens. It is therefore not surprising that a number of minority groups actively participated in the uprisings, calling for end of oppression and the recognition of their rights. This is where the relationship between minorities and citizenship emerges, since equality between all citizens before the law together with the preservation of the cultural specificities of each group is at the core of the concept of citizenship. In this policy brief, Mohamed ElAgati examines the legal, political, socioeconomic and cultural challenges that the minorities faced before and after the uprisings, drawing a set of recommendations to promote the values of citizenship in the Arab world.
